1. Suction Phase

In the suction step, the piston will move from the Upper Dead Point to the Lower Dead Point which causes the suction valve to open and air will enter the combustion chamber. So that the volume of the combustion chamber will be large.

2. Compression Phase

The compression stroke is that the piston moves from the Lower Dead Point towards the Upper Dead Point and the suction valve and exhaust valve are closed. So that the volume in the combustion chamber decreases and produces high pressure and temperature.

3. Combustion phase

This step of effort is the essence of burning. Where the suction valve and exhaust valve are tightly closed and inside the combustion chamber there is a very high compression. Meanwhile, the fuel will radiate from the injection pump and the combustion process will occur. After combustion occurs, the piston will be pushed towards the Lower Dead Point.

4. Exhaust phase

The exhaust step is the last step, where the piston moves from the Lower Dead Point towards the Upper Dead Point and the suction valve will open and discard the combustion residue. And this cycle will occur continuously when the diesel engine is in a running state.

Advantages Of Diesel Engine Combustion System

In addition to producing greater power when compared with gasoline engines, other advantages of the combustion process of diesel engines are as follows:

  • The price of diesel fuel is cheaper than gasoline. So it is more economical in the issue of fuel
  • There is no need to replace spark plugs because they do not use spark plugs. So that the maintenance costs are more affordable
  • Fuel efficient. Because it does not use spark plugs, so the entire fuel can burn completely

Disadvantages Of Diesel Engine Combustion System

Although it has some advantages, the combustion process of diesel engines also has disadvantages. Some of the disadvantages are:

  • If you run out of fuel, the diesel engine will be difficult to start. Because it will experience colds in the fuel flow
  • The initial process to start the engine is heavier, so it requires a large amount of power or battery
  • It has great sound and vibration. Because the compression of the engine is higher than that of gasoline engines.
